What is the true value of Data?

Data is an important asset for companies, people, and communities. When our personal data is exposed, like financial information, photos, or passwords, it can be very worrying. But what does it really mean when we talk about the “value” of data?

For people, it is hard to put a price on our data. But we can see its value when hackers use it to harm us, or when companies use it to target us for sales and marketing. For example, when you sign up to receive marketing emails, your data is being used to understand and influence your choices.

Someone once said:

“If you use a free app and can’t tell what the product is, then you are the product.”

This is clear today when our email inboxes are full of ads rather than personal messages.

Why data is valuable for companies

For companies, data can be turned into money, especially when it helps improve profit or make processes more efficient. Over the years, I have seen many businesses underestimate the importance of good systems and data tracking. As a result, they do not fully understand how their business is really performing.

When companies do not update their processes and use the right tools, they miss out on big opportunities.

Steps to get your data sorted

Here is a simple table showing what you can do to start using data better in your business:

StepWhy it matters
Use a CRM from the startHelps you track and understand all customer interactions.
Keep good spreadsheetsEven if they seem old-fashioned, they help small and big companies. Keep them secure and updated.
Set up a databaseMany businesses already use databases without knowing (like WordPress or HubSpot). A central database helps you see the big picture.
Look for insightsWith your data organised, you can find useful information to make better decisions.
Start nowOnce you begin, you will learn more and improve over time.

Final thoughts

Data is not just about technology. It tells the story of your business and your customers. Looking after it and using it well is one of the best ways to make your business stronger and more successful.
